RMD rejects legendary status, honors Nollywood icons

On Monday, April 14, veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, widely known as RMD, expressed his discomfort with being referred to as a “legend” in the film industry.

During his appearance on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, RMD revealed why he doesn’t embrace the title, calling it a “scam.” He clarified that while he respects and admires those who have paved the way for the industry, he doesn’t see himself as a legend.

“I think the legend of a thing is a scam,” RMD explained. “I have my legends like Uncle Pete and Uncle Olu Jacobs; these are our ancestors and legends.”

The actor, who has been in the industry for over four decades, elaborated on his reasoning, recalling how he grew up watching legendary actors like Pete Edochie and Olu Jacobs. He fondly remembered Jacobs’ famous Ribena commercial, where Jacobs famously stated, “Ribena children are the healthy children.”

RMD, now 63, emphasized that he felt uncomfortable being labeled as a legend. He said, “I don’t subscribe to being called a legend, and when they call me that, I feel they are trying to relegate me to the neighborhood of retired people or those nearing retirement.”

Having begun his acting career in 1982, RMD remains one of Nollywood’s most respected figures, though he insists he doesn’t fit the “legend” label that many may attach to him.
