Rema claims he was exploited and drugged as a teen

Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about the darker side of his early rise to global fame. The 25-year-old artist revealed that he faced significant exploitation and personal grief after entering the industry at just 19.
Rema gained massive prominence after signing with Mavin Records in 2019, but he now admits the transition was difficult. In his latest song titled ‘Moviestar,’ the singer shares harrowing details about his experiences with fame and the people around him.
Singer reveals being drugged by fans and associates
In the lyrics of his new collaboration with Sofiane Pamart, Rema claims that ladies often gave him drugs during his younger years. He suggested that his happiness was often compromised by those looking to take advantage of his youth and success.
The singer expressed that his fans do not truly understand the level of “personal grief” he has endured behind the scenes. He noted that being “caught up so young” led to feelings of being robbed by those he considered friends.
Pressure from the label to perform despite pain
Rema also hinted at the immense pressure he faced from his record label to maintain his public image and entertain fans. He explained that it was hard to quit or speak up because the label focused primarily on his output.
According to the lyrics, the industry’s demand for constant entertainment often ignored his true feelings and mental state. This candid revelation has sparked a conversation among fans regarding the protection of young talents in the Nigerian music scene.
