RCCG cleric urges Nigerians to demand removal of Governors’ immunity to curb corruption
The Pastor-in-Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Lagos Province 70, Pastor Adebayo Adeyemo, has called on Nigerians to demand the removal of constitutional immunity for state governors, arguing that the move is essential to curbing corruption and ensuring citizens benefit from tax payments and democracy.
Speaking on national expectations for peace, joy and progress, Pastor Adeyemo said Nigeria possesses enormous potential but remains held back by compromise and corruption. He noted that meaningful development would become evident once these human-induced challenges are addressed.
Commenting on recently enacted tax reform policies, the cleric said expanding the tax base is necessary but warned that it must go hand in hand with transparency and accountability. He criticised situations where government collects huge sums in revenue without judicious use, stressing that proper utilisation of funds would ultimately benefit ordinary citizens.
Pastor Adeyemo directly linked accountability in the use of tax revenue to the removal of the constitutional immunity currently enjoyed by governors. He urged Nigerians to insist that public officials who misuse public funds should not be shielded from prosecution while citizens continue to pay taxes.
Drawing a comparison with national security efforts, he said corruption should be fought with the same seriousness as terrorism, adding that stronger accountability in past administrations led to more visible public projects. He cited the era of former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a period when corruption was relatively minimal and governance outcomes were more evident.
The cleric also called for sustained prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his family, expressing confidence that the current administration has a divinely ordained purpose.
He concluded by urging citizens to speak out in favour of reforms that promote accountability, insisting that once corruption is addressed, public funds will reach the grassroots and improve living conditions.
Pastor Adeyemo’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over fiscal reforms, governance transparency and constitutional immunity, as public demand for accountability intensifies alongside rising tax obligations.
