FG targets reliable, sustainable power supply in 2026 — Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government’s top priority in 2026 is to deliver reliable, accessible and sustainable electricity across the country.

The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Mr Bolaji Tunji, following the minister’s New Year message to Nigerians and the people of Oyo State.

Adelabu said the government’s drive would be guided by continuity and renewed vigour, with deliberate efforts to enhance grid stability and expand transmission infrastructure nationwide. He added that collaboration with Electricity Distribution Companies would be intensified to improve service delivery and ensure metering initiatives reach all communities.

He noted that the Light Up Nigeria initiative would remain a priority, with a focus on powering industrial clusters and agricultural hubs to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. According to him, renewable energy development would also be scaled up, with increased deployment of solar and hydropower to serve underserved areas.

Reflecting on the past year, the minister described 2025 as a period of focused groundwork and steady progress in the power sector despite existing challenges. He said improvements were recorded in strengthening the national grid and enhancing overall system stability.

Adelabu further attributed a reduction in frequent grid collapses to the Presidential Power Initiative, also known as the Siemens deal, assuring Nigerians that ongoing Phase One of the project would further reinforce the grid and minimise disruptions.

The minister thanked Nigerians for their resilience and support, stressing that collective effort remained essential to building a robust energy future. He called on governments, communities, the private sector and citizens to support ongoing reforms, protect power infrastructure and adopt energy-efficient practices.

Extending New Year greetings to residents of Oyo State, Adelabu expressed confidence that 2026 would bring measurable progress in the power sector, both nationally and at the state level.
