The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is preparing to exit the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State. This follows a high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
The President reportedly granted his consent for the Minister to step down and focus on his political future. Adelabu has served as the head of the power ministry for over two years, overseeing several critical reforms.
President Tinubu approves governorship ambition
Tunji Bolaji, the Special Adviser on Media Relations to the Minister, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday. He noted that the President commended Adelabu for laying a solid policy foundation for the nation’s energy sector.
Adelabu is expected to formally tender his resignation after concluding a few pending official engagements. This move signals the start of his campaign to secure the top seat in Oyo State under the ruling platform.
Ongoing challenges in the Nigerian power sector
His planned exit comes at a time when the electricity sector still faces significant hurdles, including gas supply constraints and infrastructure deficits. Despite these issues, the Minister presented a report highlighting his efforts to stabilize generation and strengthen transmission capacity.
A key part of his final briefing involved the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy. This document is intended to serve as a long-term roadmap for whoever succeeds him in the ministry to ensure continuity in the ongoing reforms.
