Policeman feared dead after gunmen attack checkpoint in Abia
On Wednesday, November 20, a police officer was reportedly killed when unknown gunmen attacked a checkpoint in the Ohafia area of Abia State. Another police officer was also injured in the attack.
The incident took place at Ugwu Abba Asaga in Ohafia, but the Abia State Police Command has not yet commented on the situation. When asked for more details, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, told DAILY POST she would provide an update, but no response had been received by the time this report was filed.
This attack comes just days after the Abia State government accused unnamed politicians and outside groups of being behind a rise in kidnappings and killings, including attacks on security personnel and civilians, since May 2024. In a statement signed by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the government vowed to hold those responsible for spreading violence and insecurity in the state accountable.
However, John Okiyi Kalu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Commissioner for Trade and Investment, disagreed with the government’s view, urging that the issue of insecurity should not be politicized but instead addressed directly.
