Peter Rufai, legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, is dead

Peter Rufai, the iconic former goalkeeper of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has been reported dead.
Radio Nigeria confirmed that Rufai, aged 61, passed away on the morning of Thursday, July 3, 2025, after battling a long illness that had kept him away from the public eye for some time.
Although the family has not yet made an official announcement, a senior Lagos State Government official has confirmed the news.
Rufai was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers. During his illustrious career, he played for clubs including Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles, earning 65 caps for the national team. He featured prominently in two FIFA World Cups and was a key part of Nigeria’s victorious squad at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
