NNPP responds to El-Rufai, denies APC role in party crisis

On Thursday, March 12, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) rejected accusations from former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the crisis within the party.
El-Rufai had recently alleged that APC was intentionally fueling internal conflicts within opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP, to weaken their leadership. His comments were shared in a viral video on X on Tuesday, where he suggested that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was sponsoring these disputes.
In response, NNPP’s National Chairman, Agbo Major, issued a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, rejecting El-Rufai’s claims as misleading. He emphasized that the NNPP’s crisis, which has now been resolved, was due to the ambitions of some members who ignored party agreements and regulations.
“El-Rufai’s assertions were inaccurate, based on information he may have gathered from enemies of NNPP’s internal democratic processes,” Major said. He explained that the crisis began after the 2023 general elections, following the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding between NNPP, The National Movement (TNM), and the Kwankwassiya Movement.
Major pointed out that the origins of the disagreement have been widely reported since 2023 and urged El-Rufai to stay out of NNPP’s internal matters. He also stressed that the NNPP is not in opposition to any party, including APC, and that the focus should be on improving the welfare and well-being of all Nigerians through good governance, hard work, and the rule of law.
