Nigeria’s first female fighter pilot, Kafayat Sanni, wins top awards at Ghana

Nigeria’s trailblazing first female fighter pilot, Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni, has added another feather to her cap by emerging as the Best Allied Student and winning the Best Assistant Commandant Paper award at the prestigious Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Accra.

The awards were presented on Friday during the institution’s graduation ceremony, attended by top military officials and dignitaries from across the African continent.

Flt Lt Sanni, who first made headlines in 2019 when she was decorated as the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) first female fighter pilot after training in the United States, has since built a reputation as a committed officer and proficient instructor pilot.

She has flown combat missions with the Alpha Jet and trained younger pilots using the Super Mushshak aircraft, reflecting her growing influence within the force.

Her success at GAFCSC underscores both her personal excellence and Nigeria’s expanding role in regional defence leadership. It also highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s push for gender inclusion and capacity building under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

Flt Lt Sanni’s latest accomplishment continues to serve as a source of inspiration for young Nigerians, especially women aspiring to careers in the military and aviation.
