Kwam 1 gets one-month flight ban and new role to promote airport etiquette

Why the change of heart
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says the Federal Government’s decision to cut Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal’s (Kwam 1) flight ban from six months to one month isn’t about favoritism — it’s about turning a mistake into a teachable moment.
Kwam 1 was originally banned after blocking the movement of a ValueJet aircraft. But now, instead of serving the full penalty, he’ll spend the next few weeks working with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to raise awareness on proper behavior at airports.
‘It’s basically community service’
Keyamo took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain the logic:
“All over the world, a repentant offender is made to preach publicly against the conduct they’ve repented from. It’s like community service — free and voluntary.”
He stressed that the “ambassador” title isn’t a cushy political role with perks. Instead, it’s a way to turn Kwam 1’s slip-up into a public lesson for travelers.
Not the first time
According to Keyamo, past Nigerian governments have done something similar with other public figures who got in trouble. The idea is to correct the behavior, not just punish — especially when it’s a first-time offense.
