Kano pledges support for families of athletes killed in tragic crash

The Kano State Government has pledged N1 million in financial assistance to each of the families of 22 young athletes who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo announced the support on Saturday during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, where the victims’ remains were taken. Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo described the incident as a devastating blow not only to Kano but to the entire country.

“This is a deeply sorrowful day for all of us. These promising young athletes were returning from a national duty where they represented Kano with pride, with some even bringing home gold medals. Their lives were tragically cut short just as they neared home,” Gwarzo said.

The athletes were part of Kano’s contingent to the National Sports Festival, a major event designed to promote peace, unity, and youth development through sports.

Beyond the monetary support, Gwarzo revealed that the state would also distribute food and other relief items to ease the burden on grieving families.

“We’ve identified 20 of the victims at this facility, while two others were claimed by their families. The Governor has instructed that we remain fully present for the families during this painful time and ensure the injured athletes receive top-tier medical care,” he stated.

Gwarzo also visited the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are receiving treatment. He offered words of comfort and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to their recovery.

Governor Yusuf, through his deputy, ordered the immediate release of funds to aid both the bereaved families and the injured, emphasizing the importance of compassion and swift action in such trying times.

“On behalf of the people of Kano State and His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, we offer our heartfelt condolences. May Allah grant the departed eternal rest and comfort their families,” Gwarzo said.

As funeral preparations begin, the Kano State Government has vowed to continue supporting the affected families throughout their journey toward healing and recovery.
