The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa State has warned residents against registering more than once, describing it as a serious offence under Nigerian law.
Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa on Monday, Mallam Isah Ehimeakhe, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, emphasized that double registration is punishable by law and could result in fines, imprisonment, or both, as provided in Section 114(b) of the Electoral Act 2022.
“Once you have been issued a PVC or have already completed your registration, you do not need to register again,” Ehimeakhe stated.
“Attempting to do so amounts to double registration, which is a punishable offence.”
INEC warns Biometric system will detect double entries
He explained that the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) is specifically designed to detect multiple registrations and will automatically flag any individual attempting to register more than once.
Registration is both a right and responsibility
Ehimeakhe also reminded citizens that voter registration is both a fundamental right and a civic duty for every eligible Nigerian aged 18 and above.
“No individual can vote in an election unless they are duly registered. We urge all unregistered, eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity and register.”
Assurances on security and fairness
He reassured the public that security agencies and relevant stakeholders are working with the election body to ensure a safe, transparent, and credible registration process throughout Bayelsa State.
“INEC is committed to ensuring that no eligible citizen is denied the opportunity to register and vote,” he added.
The call comes as INEC intensifies preparations for upcoming elections and nationwide voter registration drives.
