Tragedy struck in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, as a young man identified simply as Prosper reportedly died during a cult initiation exercise.
According to sources who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prosper died on Sunday after undergoing repeated physical drills as part of an initiation process into the Aye confraternity.
What happened in Edo?
It was gathered that Prosper had expressed interest in joining the group and reached out to a family member, Cosmos, said to be a senior member of the cult. Cosmos reportedly referred him to other members for the initiation, as he was not present at the venue.
Sadly, the initiation turned fatal. Prosper collapsed during the process and was rushed to a hospital in Jattu, where he was confirmed dead.
The Edo State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident in Benin City on Monday.
“The deceased slumped during the initiation and was rushed to a hospital at Jattu, where he was confirmed dead,” Yamu stated.
He also revealed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over cult-related activities in Edo State, especially among the youth, with community leaders and law enforcement being urged to intensify efforts to curb cultism and its deadly consequences.
