Ijaw Lawmakers urge reopening of Rivers Assembly to resume Fubara impeachment

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of Ijaw extraction have called on the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, to reopen the assembly chambers to enable lawmakers resume impeachment proceedings against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu.

The call followed a change of position by four lawmakers who had earlier advocated a political solution to the lingering political crisis in the state but have now withdrawn from that stance and rejoined the impeachment process.

It was gathered that the House, which was scheduled to reconvene on Thursday, failed to sit as planned. However, the lawmakers met on Friday at the conference hall within their residential quarters, where they renewed their demand for the continuation of the impeachment exercise.

According to the legislators, the decision to proceed with impeachment was based on what they described as the refusal of the governor and his deputy to address constitutional issues raised in the impeachment notice.

Speaking to journalists, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, said they had abandoned their earlier preference for political resolutions and were now prepared to move ahead with the impeachment of the governor.

They maintained that the Assembly must be allowed to perform its constitutional duties without obstruction, stressing that reopening the chambers was necessary to resolve the ongoing political impasse in the state.
