FG asks farmers to stop planting near Alau Dam project site

The Federal Government has called on local farmers in Borno State to stop planting crops near the Alau Dam construction site. This request comes as the first phase of the ₦80 billion reconstruction project nears completion, following the dam’s collapse last year that caused deadly flooding and widespread destruction.

Tinubu-approved funds target water, farming, and future power

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, said the reconstruction is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Phase one of the project is focused on preventing another flood this rainy season and is expected to finish by September 2025.

Phase two will begin in October and run until March 2027. Once completed, the upgraded Alau Dam will provide clean drinking water, support irrigation farming, and eventually generate hydrogen power.

Farmers urged to clear the way

During a site inspection, Utsev noted that farming near the embankment is slowing down the project. He urged the Borno State government to run a sensitisation campaign to educate locals about the risks.

“We understand people want to farm, but planting near the dam site puts the entire community at risk,” Utsev said. “This upgrade will benefit everyone — we just need a little patience and cooperation.”

All eyes on flood prevention

The Minister reassured residents that flood control remains a top priority. The dam is designed to hold up to 329 million cubic metres of water — and current levels are still within safe limits.

“If anything looks risky, we’ve already given instructions to release water safely,” he added.

A future-proof dam for Borno

Utsev thanked both President Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum for their support. He also praised the media for keeping the public informed.

“When this project is done, Borno will not only have secure water and better farming — it will also be ready for clean energy generation,” he said.
