Euro 2024: Group D sees Netherlands top table as France edges past stubborn Austria
Netherlands was one of the countries that won its first group stage game in Group D, coming back from behind to win against Poland on Sunday, June 16. France also secured a win against Austria, with Kylian Mbappe going off injured with a broken nose.
The group has taken shape after another low-scoring first round of fixtures.
Netherlands went behind in the 16th minute to Adam Buksa, putting Poland ahead in the game. However, Cody Gakpo leveled the game in the 29th minute.
It wasn’t until the 81st minute that the Dutch completed the comeback, with substitute striker Wout Weghorst scoring his first shot of the game to put Holland ahead.
In the other Group D game, France fought hard to come out on the winning side, with Austria handling most of what the opponents threw at it.
The only goal of this game came in the 38th minute and it was an own goal from Austria defender Maximilian Wober.
These results leave Netherlands top of the group, France second, Poland third, and Austria bottom.
