EFCC clarifies that Yahaya Bello is not in custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports claiming that Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, is currently in its custody.

On Wednesday, September 18, the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, stated that Bello had honored an invitation from the EFCC and attended its headquarters accompanied by several high-profile Nigerians.

However, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale issued a statement clarifying that Bello remains wanted and is not in their custody. “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody,” he said.

Bello is wanted in connection with alleged money laundering charges totaling N80.2 billion, and there is an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The EFCC has made several attempts to apprehend him but has not yet succeeded.
