Edo State: Philip Shaibu resumes as deputy governor, orders staff return

Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, officially resumed his duties on Monday after a period of controversy.

In a video posted on X, Shaibu announced his return, stating: “In adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, I announce my official resumption to the office. God Bless Edo State, God Bless Nigeria.”

Shaibu instructed all his staff to also return to their duties at the Deputy Governor’s office. He warned that any staff who did not comply would face consequences. He emphasized that the recent Federal High Court ruling confirming his reinstatement meant that his office was never vacant.

He also cautioned banks against conducting any transactions related to his office without his explicit approval, citing the potential for illegality.

Shaibu expressed sadness over the recent killing of a police officer attached to the Edo APC governorship candidate upon his return to the state, and noted that suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Additionally, he mentioned that he has requested the state governor’s approval to reinstate his aides but is still awaiting a response.

This development follows Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly due to a conflict with Governor Godwin Obaseki. However, the Appeal Court in Abuja reinstated Shaibu despite the position of the Edo State government.
