Doctor reveals shocking infertility stats as Nigerian fertility hospital celebrates 20 years of changing lives

On Monday, May 26, Dr. Charles Uhioh, Chief Medical Director of Our Mother Theresa Specialist Hospital and Fertility Centre, dropped some eye-opening facts about infertility, revealing that around 15% of the global population is affected by it.

Speaking in Asaba, Delta State, during the hospital’s 20th anniversary celebration, Dr. Uhioh described infertility as a major global health issue — one that affects both men and women more than most people realize.

“In another 30 percent of cases, the issue lies with the female partner. In yet another 30 percent, both partners have fertility challenges. The remaining 10 percent falls under what we call ‘unexplained infertility’,” he explained.

He also pointed out that men are responsible for about 30% of infertility cases, debunking the common misconception that infertility is always a women’s issue.

Despite these statistics, Dr. Uhioh shared some hope. Thanks to modern medical technology and advanced fertility treatments, more families around the world are now getting the help they need.

The celebration also spotlighted the impact of the hospital, which now has branches in Lekki (Lagos), Asaba (Delta), and Uromi (Edo State). Over the years, it has helped over 6,000 families through IVF and other fertility services.

“Our slogan is, ‘Every Woman is a Mother,’ and we are committed to women’s health, fertility care, and holistic well-being,” Dr. Uhioh said proudly.

Looking back over two decades of service, he added:
“I feel elated and very happy celebrating the grace of God. When we look back at where we started and where we are now, we have every reason to be thankful.”

“We started from absolutely nothing, and today, by God’s grace, we have been able to touch lives across continents. It’s been a journey of faith and service.”

The event brought together staff, patients, and families whose lives have been changed by the hospital’s work
