Dangote Refinery says it’s yet to receive 29 million barrels of crude oil promised by NUPRC
The problems in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry aren’t over yet. Dangote Refinery says it hasn’t received the 26 million barrels of crude oil it was promised by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Dangote Group’s spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, shared this news on Friday. He was responding to NUPRC’s claim that it helped allocate 26 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Refinery earlier this year.
NUPRC also said it plans to update its rules about how domestic crude oil should be supplied.
But Dangote Refinery says they haven’t received the oil yet.
“We appreciate the allocation, but we want to let them know that we haven’t received the cargoes,” Dangote Refinery said.
According to the refinery, NUPRC has only helped them buy one shipment of crude oil from a local producer. Most of the oil they’ve processed came from international traders.
Dangote Refinery is asking NUPRC to help put the Petroleum Industry Act into action, which requires buying crude oil directly from local producers, not through international middlemen.
“All we want is for Nigerian refineries to buy oil directly from local producers, as stated in the PIA,” they added.
Recall that Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, had previously criticized NUPRC for not enforcing domestic supply rules for International Oil Companies and other refineries in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s oil and gas sector still has a lot of challenges, even though President Bola Tinubu recently instructed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to sell crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries in Naira. This new plan hasn’t been put into action yet.
