Court delays Nnamdi Kanu’s trial indefinitely after new developments

On Monday, February 10, 2025, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja announced that the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been postponed indefinitely.

The delay followed an earlier decision on September 24, 2024, when Justice Nyako issued a recusal order after Kanu requested that she step down from his case. Kanu expressed a lack of confidence in the judge’s ability to fairly handle his trial.

After the recusal, Nyako returned Kanu’s case file to Chief Judge John Tsoho of the Federal High Court. However, Tsoho reportedly sent the case file back to Nyako, instructing her to continue overseeing the trial.

Kanu faces terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. He has been in detention since his rearrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria in 2021.
