Lawmakers vote to simplify university’s name
The Benue State House of Assembly has shortened the name of its state-owned university in Makurdi — again. The new official name is now Father Adasu University, Makurdi, replacing the longer Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University.
Lawmakers made the change on Thursday, following the report of the House Committee on Higher Education.
Why the name was changed
Majority Leader Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) said the name was simply too long and needed to be more practical.
“The previous name was unnecessarily lengthy,” he argued during the debate.
Originally, the school was known as Benue State University (BSU) until it was first renamed in December 2024 to honour the late Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, a former governor and education advocate.
Two colleges get degree-awarding status
In the same session, lawmakers also passed amendments that upgraded two colleges of education to degree-awarding institutions:

Speaker Mr. Alfred Emberga instructed the House Clerk, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the relevant bills a third time before officially declaring them passed.
