World Radio Day 2025: FG urges radio stations to raise awareness about climate change

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria called on all radio stations in the country to use their platforms to inform the public about the dangers of climate change and how it is affecting the nation.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made this appeal during a statement made in Abuja to mark World Radio Day. World Radio Day is a special occasion recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) every year on February 13.

This year’s theme is “Radio and Climate Change,” and Idris explained how important it is for the people of Nigeria to understand how climate change is affecting the environment and communities. He said, “This year’s theme holds great significance for our community in Nigeria, as we face the devastating effects of climate change on our environment and livelihoods.”

Idris continued, “Radio has always been a trusted source of information and a lifeline for communities, especially in times of crisis. In recent years, it has played a crucial role in raising awareness about climate change and its impact on our planet.”

The Minister stressed the power of radio to reach many people and help spread knowledge about how we can all work together to stop climate change. “With its wide reach and accessibility, radio has the power to educate and mobilize individuals towards taking action against climate change,” Idris said.

He encouraged all radio stations in Nigeria to broadcast information about climate change and how it affects the country, helping to equip people with the knowledge to adapt to and reduce its harmful effects. He also called for collaboration between radio stations and experts in climate change to provide accurate and trustworthy information.

The Minister emphasized that, by featuring scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers on the radio, listeners could gain a better understanding of climate change and the importance of working together to find solutions.

Idris also reminded the community that everyone can help reduce climate change by making simple changes to their daily habits. “Simple changes in our daily habits, such as reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable agriculture, can make a significant impact in the long run,” he said.

He concluded by reminding everyone that climate change is a global problem and that Nigeria, along with other countries, must work together to fight it. “As we celebrate the role of radio in fighting climate change, we must also remember that these issues go beyond our borders. The effect of climate change is felt globally, and it is our responsibility to join hands with other nations to find solutions and create a better future for the generations to come.”

The Minister also recalled President Bola Tinubu’s remarks at the 29th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he highlighted Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change and the strategies Nigeria is taking to address it.

In his speech, President Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, build resilience, and implement policies that help protect the environment.

By raising awareness, radio stations can play a key role in helping everyone understand climate change and take action to protect the planet for future generations.
