France praises Nigeria’s fight against drugs, donates equipment to NDLEA

On Thursday, March 13, the French government showed its support for Nigeria’s efforts to fight illegal drugs by donating important equipment to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

This donation was celebrated by both the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, and NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd).

Speaking at the donation ceremony, Ambassador Fonbaustier praised the NDLEA for its remarkable achievements in tackling drug crimes, including over 57,000 arrests, the seizure of nearly 10 million kilograms of drugs, and over 10,000 convictions in just four years. He added, “You are among the best in the world in the fight against illicit drugs and narcotics. Your operational successes—marked by arrests, seizures, and high conviction rates—set NDLEA apart. We can learn from each other in this battle.”

In response, Marwa thanked France for the generous donation, noting that it would significantly improve NDLEA’s operations. He emphasized the importance of the strong partnership between Nigeria and France, especially after President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to France. Marwa also mentioned that the NDLEA is seeking more specialized training in investigations and cyber transactions and highlighted the importance of supporting its Alternative Development Project, which helps cannabis farmers switch to alternative crops.

The donation and partnership mark another step forward in strengthening the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria.
