Wike warns PDP national convention may be delayed if party crisis persists

Convention date set, but internal issues remain

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) plans to hold its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, this November. But the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has hinted that the event might not happen if ongoing party crises aren’t resolved.

It’s about more than the venue

Speaking during his monthly media briefing, Wike stressed that the problem isn’t where the convention will take place, but the unresolved issues leading up to it.

“The issue of the National convention is not the problem, the issue is the problems leading to the convention,” he said.

Wike explained that PDP agreed to set up committees for the Southeast and Ebonyi to address some concerns. His team was meeting that same day to discuss next steps.

Clearing the air on misconceptions

Wike also pushed back against rumors suggesting he’s opposing the convention because of personal disputes or objections to the venue.

“The venue is not the subject matter… The party can decide whether to hold it in Sokoto or Borno. What matters is, have you done what you are supposed to do before holding that convention?”

What’s next for PDP?

Wike acknowledged that PDP has started taking steps to resolve the issues and warned that if complaints aren’t satisfactorily addressed, the convention could face delays or cancellation.
