Wike celebrates ‘impressive’ speed and quality of Abuja’s major infrastructure projects

On Monday, April 14, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike praised the quality and fast pace of ongoing infrastructure projects during a tour of major construction sites across Abuja.

From new highways to revamped public spaces, Wike said the transformation happening across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is “frankly impressive.”

“Frankly speaking, we are very impressed with what we have seen. The quality of work is commendable, and the projects are progressing on schedule,” Wike said.

The minister visited several sites, including the:

  • Renovation of the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC)
  • Extension of Obafemi Awolowo Way (N5) from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III
  • Road network in Gishiri village and Katampe District
  • N16 Interchange at NICON Junction, connecting Maitama and Katampe to Wole Soyinka Way

Wike confirmed that contractors are doing their part, while the government is keeping up with timely payments to avoid delays.

He showed particular excitement about the near-completion of the AICC, calling the ongoing transformation of the center “amazing” compared to its previous condition.

Wike also announced that the N16 Interchange will be completed and inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in May, as part of events marking his second year in office. Meanwhile, the N5 extension project is expected to wrap up by the end of May as well.

He added that all the projects are funded through the 2024 FCT budget, which remains active until the end of June. The 2025 FCT Statutory Budget has already been submitted to the National Assembly and will be defended when lawmakers return from recess.

Wike highlighted that about 95% of the capital projects in the current budget have already been executed — calling it a record-breaking achievement for the FCT.

“There is no project captured in the 2024 budget that has not been addressed,” he affirmed.
