VP Shettima visits Borno, vows to tackle flood disaster head-on
Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the flooded palace of the Shehu of Borno on Tuesday to assess the impact of the recent floods.
During his visit, Vice President Kashim Shettima assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Tinubu will tackle the challenges of perennial flood in the country, saying that a comprehensive roadmap aimed at addressing the issue head-on has already been developed.
The floods, the worst in recent times, have displaced thousands and severely affected critical facilities like the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, government house, and post office.
The flooding, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam and excess water from the spillways, has affected Maiduguri and surrounding towns, submerging several neighbourhoods, including the Emir’s palace, underwater.
The hardest-hit areas are Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin, where homes have been swept away and streets have become rivers.
The flood which began over the weekend has worsened. Authorities have blamed it on the excess water from the Alau Dam and the collapse of the spillways which has unleashed a significant surge of water downstream, causing widespread flooding in the surrounding communities.
