US Embassy makes social media disclosure mandatory for visa applicants

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that all visa applicants must now provide a full history of their social media handles when completing the DS-160 form.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Monday, August 18, 2025, the Mission stressed that applicants are required to list all usernames or handles they’ve used on any platform in the last five years.

The embassy warned that failing to disclose this information — or providing misleading details — could have serious consequences, including visa denial or even being declared ineligible for future US visas.

“Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas,” the Mission said.

This move is part of stricter background checks designed to improve security vetting for travelers to the United States.
