UK joins global shift toward formal recognition of Palestinian statehood
The United Kingdom has officially recognised the State of Palestine, joining Australia, Canada, and Portugal in what is being described as a significant shift in international diplomacy. This recognition marks a turning point in the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, aligning the UK with growing international support for a two-state solution.
To mark the occasion, a flag-raising ceremony was held outside the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Hammersmith, west London, on Monday. The event came just a day after the announcement of recognition and coincided with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where several other countries, including France, are expected to follow suit.
Head of mission hails ‘long overdue’ recognition
Speaking at the flag-raising event, Husam Zomlot, Head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, described the recognition as “long overdue” and a powerful acknowledgement of a historic injustice.
Zomlot held up a plaque reading “Embassy of the State of Palestine”, announcing that it would be officially installed soon, “pending some legal work, some bureaucratic work.” The move symbolises an upgrade of the Palestinian mission to full embassy status, a development that could reshape diplomatic relations between Palestine and the UK.
“This recognition is particularly significant coming from Britain,” Zomlot said, referencing the 1917 Balfour Declaration, in which the British government supported the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine—a document that many Palestinians view as the origin of their displacement.
UK to support Palestinian embassy setup
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that the Palestinian Authority would now be able to establish an official embassy and appoint an ambassador in the UK. She described the recognition as part of a broader diplomatic process aimed at reviving the stalled peace process.
“There will be a series of different stages and processes to go through. But what’s important is that this forms part of a renewed commitment to a two-state solution,” Cooper said in an interview with the BBC.
When asked about the British consulate in East Jerusalem, Cooper noted that it had been operational before the formation of the State of Israel in 1948, and would remain as is for now while diplomatic processes with the Palestinian Authority continue.
Language shift signals policy change
In a related move, the UK Foreign Office updated its travel advice, removing references to the “Occupied Palestinian Territories” and replacing them with the term “Palestine.” This symbolic change is seen as a clear signal of Britain’s evolving stance on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the decision “absurd” and warned that it could “endanger Israel’s existence.” In response, Netanyahu has vowed to expand settlement activity in the Israeli-occupied West Bank—a move widely viewed by the international community as a major obstacle to peace.
Ongoing war in Gaza underscores urgency
The diplomatic developments come amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which erupted following Hamas’s surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. That attack claimed the lives of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli sources.
In retaliation, Israel launched a prolonged military campaign in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, which the United Nations considers a reliable source, at least 65,208 people have been killed, the majority of them civilians.
Global support grows for Palestinian statehood
With the UK’s decision, momentum appears to be building toward broader international recognition of Palestinian statehood. While over 130 countries have recognised Palestine to date, support from key Western nations like the UK, Canada, and Australia could add significant diplomatic weight to the Palestinian cause on the global stage.
The recognition is being widely interpreted as an attempt to revive stalled peace talks and balance the international response to the prolonged conflict, especially as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate.
