Senator Harry-Banigo calls for probe into repeated explosions at NNPCL facilities

Senator Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has called for an urgent investigation into the repeated explosions at various NNPCL facilities within OML 18, which have affected Bonny and Degema Local Government Areas.
The most recent explosion occurred two days ago at Bonny’s Cawthorne Channel, following a similar incident two weeks ago in Bukuma (Agum), Degema Local Government Area. Describing the frequency of these incidents as alarming, Senator Harry-Banigo stated, “The recurrence of these fire outbreaks within the same OML 18 location in such a short time is deeply troubling. Any responsible society, organization, or institution should consider this a matter of grave concern.”
As the immediate past Deputy Governor of Rivers State, the Senator urged NNPCL, operators of OML 18, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the explosions. She emphasized that the probe must identify both the immediate and underlying causes of the incidents, as well as their impact on the environment and local livelihoods.
While acknowledging the role of host communities in safeguarding oil installations, she stressed that NNPCL must uphold the highest safety standards in its operations. She also called for swift and decisive action to prevent further hazardous incidents, which pose an ongoing threat to the environment and the well-being of affected communities.
The repeated explosions have raised concerns about safety protocols, environmental damage, and the security of oil facilities in the region, prompting renewed calls for accountability and preventive measures.
