Manchester United legend Roy Keane has heavily criticized Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold following their recent European defeat. The Spanish giants suffered a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.
Keane labeled the England international’s defensive display at the Santiago Bernabéu as “childish.” He argued that the right-back’s inability to handle basic defensive duties cost his team dearly in the high-stakes encounter.
Basic defensive errors cost Real Madrid at home
Despite providing an assist for Kylian Mbappé during the match, Alexander-Arnold struggled to contain the Bayern attack. Keane specifically pointed to a crucial lapse in concentration that allowed Luis Díaz to score the opening goal for the German side.
The pundit noted that letting a player like Díaz slip behind his shoulder was unacceptable at this level of competition. Harry Kane eventually doubled the lead for the Bundesliga giants, leaving Madrid with an uphill task in the second leg.
Keane expresses frustration over repeated mistakes
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane expressed his total exhaustion with the defender’s lack of tactical discipline. He argued that while fans praise the player’s passing ability, he consistently fails at the “basics” of defending.
“I’m fed up. The same story in every important match,” Keane remarked during his post-match analysis. He insisted that Champions League players cannot afford to “switch off” like Alexander-Arnold did during the decisive moments of the game.
