Rivers assembly moves to impeach Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over alleged gross misconduct.

The move followed the Assembly’s sudden resumption of plenary on Thursday, earlier than its previously scheduled date of January 26. The decision was communicated through an internal memo signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi.

The memo, dated January 5, stated that by the directive of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Chike Amaewhule, and in line with the House’s Standing Orders, lawmakers were to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., urging members to attend with utmost importance.

During the plenary session presided over by Amaewhule, the Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations and gross misconduct leveled against Governor Fubara.

According to the Assembly, the governor was accused of converting state funds into foreign currency and allegedly paying individuals from Abuja to influence President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent lawmakers from summoning him to present the 2025 budget before the House.

Twenty-six members of the Assembly signed the notice, which the lawmakers claimed was in line with constitutional provisions.

Amaewhule said the notice of allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days.

In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Linda Stewart, also read out a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Odu.
