Residents of Wuse Zone Six raise alarm over contaminated tap water

Unsafe water making people sick

People living in Wuse Zone Six, Abuja, are sounding the alarm about dirty water coming from their taps. Several residents say the water looks and smells polluted, with some falling ill after using it.

Mr. Jimoh Olatunji shared his experience with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), saying he and his daughter got sick with stomach issues after drinking the tap water.

Worms, bad smell, and unusable water

Another resident, Mr. Uche Uchechukwu, described the water as unusable for even basic chores.

“When we turn on the taps, black and red worms come out, and there’s a strong faecal smell. We can’t use it for cooking, bathing, or washing,” he said.

Residents association promises action

The chairman of the Wuse Zone Six Residents Association, Alhaji Ayinde Soaga, promised to take the complaints to the FCT Water Board next week and push for solutions.

“I will go to the FCT Water Board office and the tenement rate office to address these issues. By our next meeting, I hope to have some answers,” he assured.

Water board says issue is local and advises caution

Mr. Daniel Salka, General Manager of the FCT Water Board, said the water supplied across Abuja is clean, calling the problem in Wuse Zone Six a localized issue.

He explained some homes have sewer lines too close to their water pipes, which could cause contamination. He urged residents to hire professionals to fix internal pipe problems.

“Our water doesn’t smell. It’s the same water we supply to everyone. I advise residents not to drink the water for now. Once we get detailed reports, we’ll send a team to inspect,” Salka added.
