Plateau dismisses rumours of Mutfwang’s YPP move

Government refutes alleged political realignment

The Plateau State Government has firmly dismissed circulating claims that Governor Caleb Mutfwang is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Young Progressives Party (YPP). Officials described the rumour as “a baseless fabrication designed to cause confusion” and urged the public to ignore what they termed coordinated misinformation.

The speculation, which began gaining traction on social media earlier in the week, suggested that the governor was preparing a surprise political switch in response to internal challenges within the PDP. But authorities say no such plans exist, insisting that Governor Mutfwang remains committed to his mandate and the platform on which he was elected.

Officials say rumour aims to destabilize the state

In a statement released by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, the administration described the report as a calculated attempt to destabilize the political environment in Plateau State. According to the statement, unnamed individuals are “pushing false narratives to instigate unrest” and distract the government from ongoing development projects.

The spokesperson stressed that the governor’s focus is on consolidating peace, improving security, and accelerating infrastructural development across the state. “No amount of propaganda will derail the administration from fulfilling its promises to the people,” the statement added.

PDP leaders reaffirm governor’s loyalty to the party

Leaders of the PDP in Plateau State also weighed in, reaffirming that Governor Mutfwang remains an active and loyal member of the party. They emphasized that the governor has been at the forefront of strengthening the PDP’s structure in the state and helping it recover from previous legal and electoral setbacks.

Party officials labelled the rumour as an attempt to deepen existing divisions and weaken the PDP ahead of future elections. They encouraged supporters to stay united and avoid being swayed by viral but unverifiable claims.

YPP denies knowledge of defection plot

Interestingly, the Young Progressives Party—at the centre of the controversy—also released a response denying any knowledge of discussions or negotiations involving the governor. A senior member of the party stated that while YPP remains open to welcoming new members, it has not engaged Governor Mutfwang in any political talks.

The party’s clarification further weakened the credibility of the rumours, as both the alleged defecting party and the host party denied any ongoing plans.

Residents demand accountability from rumour peddlers

Across Plateau State, reactions to the claim have ranged from amusement to frustration. Some residents described the rumour as “the latest in a series of political distractions,” while others called for stricter penalties for individuals spreading unverified or harmful information.

Civil society groups urged citizens to rely on official sources for political updates and cautioned against amplifying sensational reports without evidence. They emphasized that misinformation can hinder governance and fuel unnecessary tensions.

Government urges focus on development, not distractions

The Plateau State Government concluded its statement by urging the public to focus on the progress being made in the state rather than on political drama. Officials highlighted ongoing projects in education, healthcare, transportation, and rural development, noting that the administration remains transparent and accountable.

They reassured residents that if any major political decisions were ever to be made, they would be communicated openly and not hidden behind speculative social media posts.

The government called on all stakeholders—citizens, media outlets, and political actors—to prioritize stability and truth as the state continues its development journey.
