Irabor, Matawalle say Wike–soldiers encounter shows need to respect uniform

Former defence chiefs react to viral confrontation

Former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (rtd.), and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, have weighed in on the recent altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a group of soldiers in Abuja. The incident, which went viral after a video surfaced online, showed Wike engaging military personnel who reportedly blocked a section of the road during routine operations.

Both Irabor and Matawalle have now called for calm, stating that no offence was committed by either party and emphasizing the importance of mutual respect between civilians and members of the armed forces.

Irabor: Soldiers acted within operational protocol

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Gen. Irabor noted that the soldiers involved did not violate any military procedure. According to him, the personnel were carrying out assigned duties and did not exhibit any conduct that could be deemed unprofessional or provocative.

He explained that military checkpoints and barricades often emerge from real-time security intelligence, and while they may inconvenience road users, they remain critical for maintaining national security.

Irabor added that Wike’s engagement with the soldiers appeared to stem from concerns about administrative oversight rather than any deliberate attempt to obstruct them. He stressed that such interactions should always be handled with patience and understanding to avoid unnecessary tensions.

Matawalle: Respect for uniform is non-negotiable

Echoing Irabor’s position, Defence Minister Bello Matawalle urged Nigerians to recognize the symbolic and operational weight carried by military uniforms. He stated that the armed forces operate under strict command structures, and their presence in any location is typically tied to security responsibilities.

Matawalle clarified that the video did not portray insubordination or misconduct on the part of the soldiers. Instead, it showed the need for sustained collaboration between political leaders, security agencies, and the public.

He emphasized that respecting the uniform does not imply immunity from scrutiny but rather acknowledges the risks military personnel take to protect lives and maintain order.

No offence committed, officials insist

Both men stressed repeatedly that neither Wike nor the soldiers committed any offence in the encounter. Irabor highlighted that disagreements in the line of duty are normal and can be resolved through established protocols.

“What matters most is that such issues do not escalate or undermine cooperation between civil authorities and security agencies,” he said.

Matawalle added that from the ministry’s perspective, the situation required no disciplinary action. The minister urged Nigerians to avoid politicizing the matter, noting that misinterpretations often arise when short video clips circulate without context.

Security experts call for clear guidelines

Following the incident, several security analysts have urged the government to establish clearer communication frameworks between political officeholders and armed forces operating in civilian areas. They argue that while soldiers must maintain professionalism, public officials also have a responsibility to understand the constraints of military operations.

Analysts also warned that viral videos can inflame tensions if not addressed quickly by authorities. In this case, they applauded the prompt clarifications from Irabor and Matawalle, noting that such proactive communication prevents misinformation from spreading further.

Public reaction mixed but largely calm

Across social media platforms, Nigerians shared varying interpretations of the incident, with some commending Wike’s assertiveness and others defending the soldiers’ operational conduct. However, many users agreed that both parties handled the matter without escalation.

Residents in the FCT told reporters that they hope the incident leads to improved coordination between the minister’s office and security agencies, especially considering the capital’s complex security landscape.

Government urges calm and continued cooperation

To conclude their remarks, Irabor and Matawalle jointly appealed for unity, calling the encounter a reminder of the delicate balance between civil authority and military operations. They praised the soldiers for their composure and commended Wike for addressing the issue without resorting to confrontation.

They reiterated that national security thrives when all actors—civilian and military—maintain respect, communication, and professionalism.
