PDP suspends guber candidate, Ezenwafor over alleged compromise

Anambra State PDP takes disciplinary action amid election fallout

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has suspended its governorship candidate, Jude Ezenwafor, following allegations of compromise during the just-concluded election.

According to a statement released by the party on Monday, Mr Ezenwafor is accused of failing to campaign actively, refusing to engage with the party’s structure and effectively “selling out” the contest.

The decision was announced by the State Executive Committee of the party, chaired by Chidi Chidebe, who spoke to journalists after the meeting held at the party secretariat. The suspension takes immediate effect, pending further investigation by the party’s disciplinary committee.

Allegations of non-performance and misconduct

In the communique read out during the press briefing, the party lambasted Ezenwafor’s conduct during the election cycle. The statement noted that after securing the party ticket, the governorship candidate allegedly “went incommunicado,” refused to attend promised rallies and meetings, and later claimed he had been attacked and shot in Abuja — a claim the party says lacks verification.

More damning was the performance score cited by the party: Ezenwafor reportedly secured only one (1) vote in his own ward (Nnobi Ward 3, Idemili South LGA) out of twelve polling units — an outcome the PDP described as “the worst result for PDP in any ward across the state.” The low score, the statement argued, reflects “a lack of character, credibility, and commitment to both the party and the election.”

Given these issues, the party imposed a one-month suspension with immediate effect, and referred Ezenwafor to the state disciplinary committee for further action. The statewide leadership also urged the national secretariat to withhold recognition of him and any associates linked to the alleged misconduct.

Internal party dynamics at work

Observers suggest that this disciplinary move reflects deeper tensions within the PDP in Anambra State, where internal cohesion has been under strain ahead of the gubernatorial election held on 8 November 2025. Ezenwafor’s early suspension signals the party’s leadership is attempting to assert discipline, accountability and restore morale among grassroots members.

By publicly admonishing their own candidate, the Anambra PDP leadership appears to be sending a message about competitive seriousness: that winning or credible performance matters, and that the party will not tolerate candidates who fail to engage fully.

Broader implications for the election and party credibility

The controversy raises questions about candidate-screening, campaign mobilisation, and internal discipline — key ingredients for electoral success. For the PDP in Anambra, the outcome of the election saw dominant performance by their rival party, while the PDP’s showing was widely described as weak. The party now must contend not just with the loss, but with internal accountability and public perception.

Analysts say that Ezenwafor’s suspension — even if symbolic — is important for the party’s integrity. It offers an opportunity for the PDP to demonstrate that poor results will not be ignored, that internal sanctions apply, and that the party seeks to rebuild and re-energise its structures.

Moving forward: questions ahead for PDP

What happens next for Jude Ezenwafor and his role in the PDP remains open. The one-month suspension is just the first step. The State Disciplinary Committee will investigate the full claims and may recommend further sanctions. Meanwhile, the National Working Committee of the PDP must decide whether to enforce the state’s advice to withhold recognition of the candidate and his collaborators.

For the party faithful in Anambra, the question is whether this action will translate into genuine structural reforms: improved candidate selection, stronger campaign architecture, grassroots mobilisation, and effective internal oversight. The broader aim will be to reassure supporters that the PDP is serious about contesting future elections and building back credibility in the state.

As the Anambra contest recedes, the PDP must swiftly shift from internal crisis-management to constructive rebuilding — ensuring that lessons are learned, responsibility is accepted, and renewal begins.
