PDP caretaker committee attends INEC meeting amid leadership dispute

The Nyesom Wike-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is attending the regular quarterly meeting of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), days after a Federal High Court in Ibadan refused to recognise the Tanimu Turaki-led leadership of the party.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the meeting includes the PDP NWC’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu. INEC has yet to issue an official comment on the development.
The Turaki-led faction, which had approached the Ibadan court seeking an order of mandamus to compel INEC to recognise its leadership, rejected the judgement and has filed an appeal. The court declined the prayers, stating it would amount to sitting on an appeal over courts of coordinate jurisdiction. The Mohammed-led NWC had welcomed the ruling.
NAN reports that INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan met with leaders of the two PDP factions on December 19, 2025, ahead of the February 21 FCT Area Council elections and the forthcoming Osun and Ekiti state governorship elections. Also in attendance were Nenadi Usman, Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), and National Secretary, Sen. Darlington Nwokocha.
Other participants included Yusuf Dantalle, National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and national leaders of other political parties, including Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC).
Ahead of the elections, INEC has also held meetings with civil society organisations and media executives, and is expected to convene the quarterly meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Friday.
A check on INEC’s website shows Umar Damagun and Sen. Anyanwu still listed as PDP National Chairman and Secretary, respectively. For the Labour Party, the site reflects Usman and Nwokocha as National Chairman and Secretary, noting “court order” as the basis.
