Oyedele dismisses fears of direct bank tax deductions

Amid growing public concern over Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, has dismissed claims that the government intends to deduct money directly from citizens’ bank accounts.

Speaking at a media workshop on the new consolidated tax law, Oyedele described the circulating warnings as “false, dangerous and capable of destabilising the economy.” He emphasized that no government agency, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) or the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has the authority to debit individuals’ accounts.

“Whether you have ¦50,000 or ¦50 million, nobody is taking any money from your account. It is simply not true,” Oyedele stated, attributing the online rumours to ignorance and deliberate misinformation.

The clarification comes as the government continues to roll out reforms aimed at simplifying taxation and enhancing compliance, amid widespread public anxiety fueled by social media speculation.
