Obasanjo hails National Sports Festival as a symbol of unity, resilience, and post-war healing

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the National Sports Festival (NSF) as a powerful tool for national unity and reconciliation, emphasizing its enduring role in mending the nation’s fabric after the Civil War.
This was revealed in a statement titled “A Triumph of the Spirit”, released on Tuesday, May 20, in Abeokuta by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi.
As Abeokuta hosts the 22nd edition of the NSF, Obasanjo reflected on the festival’s historical importance:
“Since its inception in Lagos in 1973, the festival has been more than a competition; it has served as a beacon of unity, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the Civil War.”
He stressed that the festival continues to transcend politics, language, and cultural barriers, creating lasting friendships and preparing athletes for greater challenges.
“Today, it will continue to bring people together, fostering friendships across cultural divides and preparing athletes for future challenges.”
“Beyond the scoreboard lies the spirit of the games”
In his heartfelt message to delegates and athletes participating in the Gateway Games, Obasanjo urged Nigerians to see the NSF not just as a sporting event, but as a celebration of human resilience.
“The true spirit of these games lies beyond medals or state rankings. It is found in courage, perseverance, and the joy of participation.”
He highlighted that the real victories are in the determination and sacrifice that bring athletes to the field, even if they don’t leave with medals.
“For some, the journey to compete may not lead to a podium finish, but the effort and resilience shown are monumental achievements.”
Celebrating the human spirit
Obasanjo praised the indomitable human spirit at the heart of the competition:
“These Gateway Games celebrate that indomitable spirit—the drive to push through pain, overcome obstacles, and pursue excellence.”
He concluded by praying that the ongoing festival would not only bring joy and unity, but also reflect the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
The National Sports Festival, often dubbed Nigeria’s mini-Olympics, has played a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing sports talent, while also promoting national cohesion since its debut in 1973.
