No one is above the law in Abuja, says Wike at OAU lecture

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that no individual is above the law in Abuja, dismissing the notion of “untouchables” in the nation’s capital as a myth.
Wike made the statement on Thursday during the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he delivered a lecture titled “Nigeria of Our Dreams.”
Addressing students, academics, and dignitaries, the former Rivers State governor emphasized that leadership requires boldness and the willingness to make unpopular decisions for the collective good.
“Poor people don’t own houses in the FCT. All the affluent areas—Maitama, Asokoro, and the Central Business District—are occupied by the rich. Some of them believe they are untouchable,” Wike said.
“But a good leader must be ready to step on toes, and that is exactly what we have done. That is why Abuja is becoming more like a true federal capital territory.”
He highlighted that since assuming office nearly two years ago, his administration has enforced strict compliance with laws and regulations, consistent with constitutional principles. According to him, the idea that certain elites are exempt from obligations like taxation is unacceptable.
“Mention one poor person who owns property in Maitama—none. They are all wealthy individuals who don’t want to pay taxes. Well, they must pay. If they don’t, I will touch them, and heaven will not fall—in fact, it will be at peace,” he added.
Wike stressed that he was not appointed to engage in a “beauty contest” or win popularity, but to deliver governance through decisive and principled leadership.
He also praised President Bola Tinubu as a leader of courage and conviction, saying, “Leadership is not a popularity contest; it’s about courage and the ability to make tough decisions. President Bola Tinubu is one such leader—bold and decisive.”
The minister’s remarks drew applause from the audience, as he reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring order, accountability, and transparency in the FCT, regardless of class or influence.
