NIS hikes passport fees again

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced another increase in passport application fees, effective September 1, 2025, with the 32-page booklet (five-year validity) now priced at ₦100,000 and the 64-page (ten-year validity) raised to ₦200,000.
The agency said the hike was necessary to maintain passport quality, improve security features, and align with global standards as part of efforts to modernise service delivery. Fees for Nigerians in the diaspora, however, remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page and $230 for the 64-page booklet.
This marks the second major increment within one year. On September 1, 2024, the price for a 32-page passport rose from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, while the 64-page jumped from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000. The latest review effectively doubles the 2024 rates, sparking widespread criticism amid Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship.
Reactions have trailed the development on social media, particularly under a Facebook post by Vanguard. One user wrote, “A Graduate Assistant or Asst. Lecturer will not be able to pay for a Nigerian Passport from Sept. 2025.”
Another, Martin Nnodim, expressed frustration: “If una like make passport 10m, if Europe give me visa or U.S.A I will still leave this country for una run for my life and future…”
The increment comes at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with high inflation, weak purchasing power, and rising cost of living.
