NIMC flags dangerous internet phishing scheme, warns Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a critical security alert to Nigerians regarding a fraudulent social media post circulating across the internet space. The scam falsely promises a free online portal for correcting errors in the National Identification Number (NIN) database.
The commission published a public advisory on its verified X handle on Tuesday to warn citizens against data theft. According to digital security updates from DAILY POST, the fake platform operates as a phishing scheme specifically designed to harvest sensitive personal details from unsuspecting applicants.

The management advised members of the public to avoid clicking on any unverified external links claiming to offer free modifications. The commission clarified that all legitimate data updates and corrections must strictly go through its approved self-service platform accessible only on the official web portal.
“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the information safety agency stated in its official publication. Media monitoring by Vanguard Nigeria indicates that the commission remains committed to maintaining the absolute integrity of national identity systems.
The agency urged patriotic citizens to report any suspicious websites or text messages falsely claiming affiliation with the commission to law enforcement authorities. Reports from PUNCH emphasized that engaging with unverified third-party platforms compromises personal safety and exposes individuals to severe financial fraud.
