June 12: Akume inaugurates committee for 2026 Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of official activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration. The presidential address forms part of a series of national events lined up by the Federal Government to commemorate the anniversary.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, confirmed the developments during the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Tuesday in Abuja. According to a report by DAILY POST, the committee will coordinate a nationwide programme, including a World Press Conference on June 4 and a Democracy Day Gala night.
Federal Government honours heroes of June 12 struggle
Inaugurating the planning committee, George Akume paid glowing tributes to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other unsung heroes of the historic June 12 struggle. The government scribe explained that the annual anniversary provides a sobering opportunity for citizens to reflect deeply on the heavy sacrifices made by past patriots.
“The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria,” Akume stated. A media dispatch by PUNCH noted that the SGF directed all sub-committees to submit their operational budgets immediately.
The administration intends to use the national celebration to showcase its achievements and demonstrate progress made in consolidating democratic reforms despite prevailing socio-economic challenges. Newspaper updates from Vanguard Nigeria confirm that the celebration will remain modest but purposeful in strict alignment with the fiscal responsibility policy of the current government.
