Nigerian rapper Oladips reveals EFCC arrest over unpaid taxes

EFCC raid shocks popular rapper
Popular Nigerian musician Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, professionally known as Oladips, has revealed that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over unpaid taxes, shedding light on a personal ordeal that shook him and his community.
The rapper shared his experience during an exclusive interview on Hip TV, explaining the unexpected turn of events that led to his detention.
The incident recalls a raid in November 2024, when the EFCC reportedly stormed Oladips’ estate at around 3 a.m., arresting several residents over alleged fraud. At the time, many assumed the arrests were linked to fraudulent activities, but Oladips clarified that he was not involved in any criminal schemes.
The arrest and its circumstances
According to Oladips, the EFCC officers went from house to house during the early hours, creating panic in the estate. Speaking about that night, he said:
“Nigeria just happened to me because it was just a normal night and EFCC entered my estate. I mean it’s a big estate and they were just going from house to house arresting people. I was inside my house. It was about 3 a.m.”
Oladips explained that he initially assumed the situation was unrelated to him. “I saw it inside the estate group that EFCC were inside. I promise you, I was on my bed pressing phone because it’s none of my business. I didn’t run because I don’t do fraud, I don’t do Yahoo. Na person wey do fraud go dey run,” he noted.
The rapper recalled how the EFCC officers forcibly entered his home, breaking his kitchen door, and confiscated his phones to conduct their investigation. However, it quickly became apparent that he was not involved in any fraudulent activities, and the officers shifted focus.
Unpaid taxes lead to detention
Oladips revealed that the reason for his detention was his failure to pay taxes. He recounted:
“When they can’t find anything to hold me down, That’s when one of their oga came out and said do I pay tax? That’s how they locked me up for not paying tax.”
The revelation underscores a broader issue in Nigeria regarding tax compliance among individuals and professionals, even in high-profile industries like entertainment. Oladips’ experience highlights the EFCC’s expanding role in addressing not only financial crimes but also matters of fiscal accountability.
Public reaction and lessons
Oladips’ story has generated widespread discussion on social media, with fans expressing both sympathy and concern over the methods used during the raid. Many Nigerians have weighed in on the importance of paying taxes, while others criticized the EFCC for its approach, which some described as heavy-handed.
The rapper’s ordeal serves as a reminder that tax obligations in Nigeria are enforceable, regardless of one’s profession or public profile. It also emphasizes the need for awareness and compliance to avoid unnecessary legal troubles.
Moving forward
Despite the stressful experience, Oladips has remained focused on his music career and continues to advocate for responsible financial practices among his peers. His story has sparked important conversations about tax education, law enforcement procedures, and citizens’ rights, particularly for young professionals and entertainers navigating financial responsibilities in Nigeria.
The EFCC raid and subsequent detention of Oladips over unpaid taxes illustrate a growing trend of regulatory scrutiny, sending a clear message about the consequences of ignoring legal obligations.
