Nigeria-UK ties strengthened as President Tinubu meets King Charles III
In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London, reaffirming the strong relationship between the two nations. The meeting, held at the King’s request, marks the first encounter between the two leaders since the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year.
During their discussion, President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s firm commitment to addressing climate change in a manner that aligns with the country’s energy security objectives.
The leaders shared ideas for innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, expressing mutual interest in strengthening partnerships by harnessing Nigeria’s leadership position in Africa and the Commonwealth.
The meeting also explored opportunities for collaboration in anticipation of the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
President Tinubu’s visit to the UK follows a trip to China, where several bilateral agreements were signed, and precedes his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, “President Bola Tinubu was warmly received on Wednesday in London by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting, highlighting the enduring and cherished relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”
