Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has predicted that Arsenal will beat Chelsea in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Neville expects a comfortable win for the champions against Xabi Alonso’s side. Both London clubs go into the match with perfect starts. He has called a 2-0 Arsenal victory and noted that the Gunners have yet to concede this season.
Speaking on a Sky Sports podcast, he said Chelsea would not defend as Aston Villa did, so Arsenal might enjoy more space going forward. They would still have to stay alert to Chelsea’s attacking players. “That’s what makes it really interesting. I think Arsenal will win the game but it’s a really good test for them and a really good moment to see Chelsea in the early days of Xabi Alonso.”
The forecast treats the derby as a measure of two projects rather than a coin toss. Arsenal’s clean sheet record is the statistical case for control. Chelsea’s new manager and forward talent are the case for disruption. Neville’s 2-0 scoreline assumes the first of those stories holds for ninety minutes. Sunday will show whether Alonso’s early weeks produce a different kind of opponent from Villa, and whether Arsenal’s attack can use that difference without giving Chelsea the transition chances Neville flagged.
