NEC backs new 2026–2030 plan to drive Nigeria’s $1tr economy goal

A fresh roadmap to fuel Nigeria’s long-term growth

The National Economic Council (NEC) has officially endorsed the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026–2030) — a new national strategy designed to push Nigeria closer to a $1 trillion economy by the end of the decade.

The decision came during NEC’s 151st meeting, chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The plan builds on the government’s reform agenda and will serve as a follow-up to the National Development Plan (2021–2025), which is set to expire soon.

What’s in the plan?

According to VP Shettima, the Renewed Hope Plan aims to:

  • Consolidate ongoing economic reforms

  • Ensure policy continuity beyond 2025

  • Align short-term strategy with the long-term Nigeria Agenda 2050

  • Make development planning more inclusive and participatory

“This isn’t just a new plan,” Shettima said. “It’s a bridge — linking the lessons we’ve learned to the goals we’re still chasing.”

All hands on deck for implementation

Shettima emphasized that the new plan won’t be designed behind closed doors in Abuja. Instead, it will actively involve:

  • State and local governments

  • Civil society groups

  • The private sector

  • Labour unions, youth, and traditional leaders

“This isn’t going to be a top-down approach. Everyone gets a seat at the table,” he said.

Energy, farming, and food security also in focus

Beyond the development plan, NEC also reviewed recent progress in agriculture and energy innovation.

Shettima announced that NASENI (the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure) has expanded the production of solar-powered irrigation pumps. This move aims to:

  • Reduce farmers’ reliance on fuel-powered systems

  • Lower energy costs

  • Boost dry-season farming

  • Strengthen national food security

Next steps: Planning starts September

According to the NEC, the full drafting of the Renewed Hope Plan will begin in September 2025 to ensure timely delivery before the end of the year. This will allow federal, state, and local government agencies to use the new plan as a guide for preparing their 2026 budgets.

“This Council is not about applause,” Shettima concluded. “It’s a workshop for real solutions — and this plan is the blueprint.”
