Mikel warns AFCON victory can’t erase World Cup miss

Former Super Eagles captain reflects on Nigeria’s World Cup setback
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has emphasised that winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would not compensate for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Mikel stated that while continental success is important, missing the global tournament is a blow that no regional title can fully offset.
Mikel, who led Nigeria to several notable achievements during his playing career, expressed concern over the Super Eagles’ current trajectory. According to him, the national team must focus on long-term planning and rebuilding to remain competitive at the global level.
‘World Cup is bigger than any continental title’
The former midfielder stressed that participation in the World Cup provides unmatched exposure, experience, and financial opportunities for both players and the country. He argued that even a triumphant AFCON campaign would not match the scale of prestige and development associated with the World Cup.
“Winning AFCON is great, but missing the World Cup is a missed opportunity for our players and our football,” Mikel said. “The World Cup is where the whole world watches you, and you measure yourself against the best. No African tournament can fully replace that experience.”
He added that Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs should serve as a wake-up call for stakeholders, coaches, and players to prioritise discipline, preparation, and consistent performance.
Calls for structural reforms in Nigerian football
Mikel used the occasion to advocate for structural reforms within Nigerian football. He emphasised the need for better domestic leagues, improved youth development, and strategic management of the national team to ensure that future squads can compete effectively on the global stage.
“We need a proper plan for our leagues and youth teams,” Mikel said. “Talent is abundant, but without proper guidance and preparation, we keep repeating mistakes that cost us at crucial tournaments.”
He also highlighted the importance of mental toughness and resilience, noting that African teams often falter in critical World Cup qualifying matches due to inconsistency and pressure.
Super Eagles must rebuild for future competitions
Mikel advised current Super Eagles players to view the 2026 World Cup miss as a learning opportunity. He urged them to focus on training, tactical discipline, and unity to ensure the team remains competitive in the upcoming AFCON, Olympic qualifiers, and future World Cup campaigns.
He stressed that the national team should not rely solely on natural talent but combine it with strategic planning, modern coaching methods, and professional management to reclaim Nigeria’s status as a football powerhouse.
Fans and analysts react to Mikel’s warning
Football analysts and fans have largely agreed with Mikel’s assessment, noting that continental success, while celebrated, does not offer the same international recognition as the World Cup. Many argued that Nigeria must now intensify efforts to prepare for 2030 World Cup qualifiers to avoid repeated disappointments.
Mikel concluded by reiterating his commitment to supporting Nigerian football through mentorship programs, youth development initiatives, and active engagement with the Nigerian Football Federation.
“We owe it to our young players and the fans to build a team that competes and wins globally,” he said. “AFCON is important, but the World Cup is the ultimate goal.”
