Kefas presents N650bn budget of demonstration for 2026

Governor unveils ambitious budget for coming fiscal year

The Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, has presented a N650 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, describing it as a “Budget of Demonstration” aimed at showcasing the administration’s commitment to economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare. The presentation took place on Monday at the State House of Assembly in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

Kefas explained that the budget was designed to consolidate the gains of previous administrations while introducing innovative policies to address critical sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and security.

Budget emphasises infrastructure, security, and human capital

According to the governor, a significant portion of the budget, approximately 45 percent, will be dedicated to capital projects, including road construction, urban renewal, rural electrification, and water supply schemes. He noted that security remains a top priority, pledging enhanced funding for the state police, civil defence, and community policing initiatives.

The remaining 55 percent is allocated to recurrent expenditures, covering salaries, social welfare programs, and essential services for citizens. Kefas emphasised that the budget seeks to balance developmental needs with fiscal discipline.

“This budget demonstrates our commitment to transforming Plateau State into a hub of sustainable growth,” he said. “It is anchored on transparency, accountability, and prudent financial management.”

Legislature promises swift review

Members of the Taraba State House of Assembly commended Governor Kefas for presenting a comprehensive budget that reflects both ambition and pragmatism. The Speaker assured that the assembly would conduct a thorough review of the proposal, engage with relevant stakeholders, and ensure timely passage to facilitate the implementation of planned projects.

Public sector reforms and economic diversification

The governor also highlighted plans for public sector reforms aimed at improving efficiency, reducing waste, and encouraging private sector participation in critical sectors. He underlined the importance of economic diversification, particularly in agriculture, mining, and small and medium enterprises, as a means to create jobs and boost internally generated revenue.

Kefas added that the administration is committed to enhancing educational infrastructure and healthcare delivery, promising upgraded facilities in secondary schools, primary healthcare centers, and teaching hospitals.

Citizens urged to support the budget vision

Governor Kefas called on Taraba residents to support the budget vision by paying taxes promptly, embracing community-driven initiatives, and participating in public monitoring of government projects. He noted that citizen engagement is critical to ensuring the budget’s success.

“This is not just a government budget; it is a blueprint for collective progress,” he said. “Every Taraba resident has a role to play in achieving the objectives we have set forth.”

Analysts view budget as bold but achievable

Economic analysts have described the N650 billion budget as ambitious yet achievable, highlighting the administration’s clear focus on priority sectors and strategic planning. They observed that if implemented effectively, the budget could accelerate Plateau’s economic growth and improve living standards for residents.

As the state House of Assembly begins its deliberations, attention will be on how quickly and efficiently the proposed allocations can translate into tangible benefits for the people of Taraba State.
