Malami decries rising insecurity in Kebbi, warns against politicising security issues

A former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Kebbi State, particularly in the Argungu and Zuru Emirates, where he said bandit attacks have led to the deaths of over 200 people.
In a video message released from Birnin Kebbi, Malami criticised all levels of government for failing to adequately protect the lives and property of citizens. “I wonder how the federal government is not doing enough to protect the lives and properties of citizens, let alone the state and local governments,” he stated.
Malami called for urgent, coordinated action, urging authorities to move beyond political differences and prioritise the safety of the people. “It is high time we expressed our concern so that the federal, state, and local governments will be proactive in ensuring the security of the people,” he added.
He condemned what he described as a dangerous trend of politicising security matters, warning that such practices risk worsening the already volatile situation. “Security issues should not be politicised,” Malami warned. “Strange systems of insecurity have emerged in Kebbi, which are very disturbing and alarming.”
Citing recent attacks in Zuru Emirate, Malami lamented the loss of more than 200 lives and described the security threats in both Zuru and Argungu Emirates as “ongoing and grave.”
“Lakurawa continue to hold communities in the Argungu Emirate to ransom, while bandits destabilise the people of Kyebu and Tadurga in the Zuru Emirate,” he said.
Offering condolences to affected families, Malami reiterated the need for immediate and effective intervention. “Lives are being lost, the rights of the people are being violated, and their wealth is being destroyed,” he concluded.
